Kitchen 4 ½ minutes – A clean kitchen, according to the creator of www.Flylady.net, is the benchmark for hygiene. Oh boy, I don’t know about you, but my kitchen falls prey to left over dishes in the sink sometimes… but 4 ½ minutes…that sounded like something I could do. The tasks were simple – Wiping down the sink after doing dishes and/or loading dishwasher. Wipe down stove top and counters and sweep the floor. That wasn’t so difficult!

Now onto the Bathroom – 2 minutes – huh? 2 minutes…okey dokey I thought – Wipe out the sink. Wipe the toilet seat and rim. Swoosh the toilet bowl with a brush. Wipe the mirror and faucet and squeegee the shower door. – Done! That took a little longer than the 2 minutes but I’m on a roll now and things are looking better…feeling inspired.

Bedroom – 6 ½ minutes. I’m going to say that if you have one bedroom this is totally do-able. But getting the rest of the family to participate, let's face it, you may find some resistance… Make the bed – this is huge! The room always looks better with a made bed. Fold and/or hang clothing and put it away. Put jewelry in its proper place and clear off the night table. Phew...

Family room, Living room, Entryway – 6 minutes. Tidy up the sofa, rearrange and fluff the pillows – check! Fold blankets or throws – Done.  Wipe off table tops of crumbs, finger prints and dust. Straighten the coffee table – throw out newspapers and put the DVD/CD’s back in their place. Complete! What wasn’t added was pick up and throw away the left behind food wrappers and tissues- Yuck. Or how about putting the pet toys away that are scattered all over on the floor… That added a few extra minutes but totally worth it.

Truth be told, it took more than 19 minutes, closer to 30, however it was worth the effort. I believe over time and with practice, 19 minutes is “do-able”. It was wonderful to return home after a long day at work to a “cleaner” and neater environment. (Except for the pet toys – they managed to scatter again while we were gone.)

House work is not always fun and it certainly can feel overwhelming at times. With a plan in place, having a home “show-ready” in 30 minutes or less, is not only useful when selling a house but makes life less embarrassing when unexpected guests drop by. The City of Irvine shows– 132 closed sales/Sold in January. There are 572 homes currently available for sale in Irvine and 401 homes are currently under contract or in Escrow.

Interest rates continue to be low, prices have softened but as in any market, homes that are priced competitively sell quickly and in some cases with multiple offers.
